Hughes Takes Over as Southern Virginia Head Football Coach; Walker Named Defensive Coordinator
Southern Virginia University recently announced changes to its football coaching staff, with Tyler Hughes anointed as head coach and Jason Walker as defensive coordinator.
Hughes comes to Southern Virginia from The Ohio State
University, where he served last season as a quality control
assistant under head coach Urban Meyer. Among other duties at Ohio
State, Hughes performed advanced scouting, film analysis, and data
analytics to increase offensive efficiency and productivity,
helping the Buckeyes to a 12-2 record and No. 12 ranking in the
final Associated Press national poll.
Prior to Ohio State, Hughes experienced tremendous success
as the head football coach at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah from
2011-12. During his two seasons at the helm of Snow's program,
Hughes led the Badgers to a 20-4 overall record, including an 11-1
record in 2012. Hughes also guided the Badgers to bowl game
championships in both of his seasons as Snow's head
coach.

Less than a week after taking over as head coach, Hughes announced his hiring of Jason Walker as defensive coordinator.
Walker comes to Southern Virginia after serving as a defensive graduate assistant the past four seasons at Brigham Young University, where he learned defensive schemes from head coach Bronco Mendenhall and some of the nation's top defensive assistants.
Walker's primary responsibilities at BYU involved
preparing scouting reports, tagging film and
assisting the coaching staff in practice
and recruiting. During the 2012 season, Walker
oversaw the kickoff return unit that finished
30th in the nation in total return yards.
Prior to BYU, Walker served as the defensive coordinator and
special teams
coach at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah, and had
previous
experience coaching the defensive secondary and special
teams at Ben Lomond
High School in Ogden, Utah.
