Kyle McMullin Named Christopher Newport Director of Athletics
Christopher Newport University President Paul Trible today announced the promotion of Kyle McMullin to the position of Director of Athletics following a national search. McMullin, who has served the athletic department in various capacities for the past eight years, will begin his new duties at CNU immediately.
McMullin has overseen all of the department's fundraising efforts including the athletics annual fund -- the Captains Crew -- all major gift donors and prospects for athletics -- the Royal Court -- and the growth of the corporate sponsorship program.
"I am deeply humbled and honored that President Trible has asked me to lead the student-athletes, coaches and staff within the Christopher Newport department of athletics," McMullin said. "This is a place where the core principles of intercollegiate athletics remain the focus of our daily activity. Our student-athletes will continue to excel in the classroom and in competition. Excellence in academic and competitive pursuits are not mutually exclusive and I am proud to serve the Christopher Newport community in furthering these opportunities each and every day."
A native of Blacksburg, McMullin is a 2004 graduate of the University of Richmond with a degree in Business Administration. During his time at Richmond, he worked extensively in the athletic department, first in the ticket office and then assisting with the marketing and promotion of all varsity sports.
Beginning in June of 2010, McMullin became the Assistant Director of Athletics for Advancement and Communications and took over daily oversight of the department's communication efforts. Adding responsibility for all athletic publications and the official athletics site, CNUsports.com, McMullin has worked closely with the athletic communications staff to ensure consistent messaging and promotion of Christopher Newport's entire athletic program.
"This department has a tremendous history beyond simply the championships and hundreds of all-Americans," McMullin continued. "The foundation of success for Christopher Newport athletics has been built by an incredible collection of individuals that worked tirelessly to put our student-athletes in a position to excel. For almost fifty years, Bev Vaughan, Vince Brown, C.J. Woollum, Jon Waters and hundreds of others have left their imprint on this department."
Between his time at the University of Richmond and his arrival at Christopher Newport in 2008, McMullin spent four years with ISP Sports managing a portfolio of corporate partnerships at the University of Cincinnati from 2004 to 2006 and at Villanova University during 2007.
McMullin and his wife Lynn have two children, Caroline and Nathan, and reside in Newport News.
