INTRODUCING ... York Senior Baseball OF Ryan Poff

York College senior baseball outfielder Ryan Poff is this week's CAC website INTRODUCING ... featured student-athlete.  Poff is one of just six student-athletes in all 19 sports in the 19-year CAC history to be named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season (2006).  He is a three-time all-star honoree (hoping for a fourth when the 2009 All-CAC team is announced next week) and one of the best-hitting outfielders in Spartan history.

What is your background in the sport you play?  I started playing baseball at the age of five. I played high school baseball for Spring Grove grades 10-12 (I did not make the team in 9th grade). I now am in my 4th and final season with York College.

What is your favorite spot on campus?  My favorite spot on campus would definitely be the batting cage at our baseball field. My teammates and I go there before and after practice to work on improving our swing.

Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in? I was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C).  It is important for the York College Athletic teams to help out the community.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students? Students finding jobs right out of college nowadays because of the economy.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?  My major is Business Administration. We learn so much important information that it is difficult to narrow down. It shows me what to do to be successful in life and the business world.

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life? The most influential people in my life would be my teammates. We believe in each other and would do anything for each other. We spend so much time getting to know one another that were as close as family.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?  Never be afraid to ask for help.

What is your favorite form of entertainment? My favorite form of entertainment is watching all different types of movies. My favorite are comedies, but I will watch any genre.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team?  Besides the York College baseball team, my favorite baseball team is the Baltimore Orioles. I live about 45 minutes away from Camden Yards and have always been a fan of the Orioles since I was younger.

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with.  I would like to have dinner with Cal Ripken Jr. because he was an excellent role model for me when I was growing up. I always wanted be like him and called myself "Ryan Cal Ripken Poff." He was a great ballplayer and carried himself very well.  I would also want to have dinner with Joe Torre because he is one of the greatest MLB coaches to ever coach. He would have some excellent advice to offer me for my baseball career.  The Genie from Aladdin would be my final choice so I could make three wishes.
