Frostburg State and Salisbury Post Convincing Wins in NCAA Baseball Regional Openers

Frostburg State and Salisbury both opened up their respective NCAA Baseball Regional Tournaments with convincing victories on Wednesday. Top-seeded Frostburg State defeated sixth-seeded Washington & Jefferson 7-1 at the Mideast Regional, while fourth-seeded Salisbury downed fifth-seeded Mitchell 11-1 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Frostburg State starter Greg Schneider struckout 10 batters as the Bobcats cruised to the 7-1 win over W&J in the first game of the Mideast Regional at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pa. The Bobcats will meet the loser of tonight's matchup between third-seeded Heidelberg and fourth-seeded La Roche on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Schneider threw his second complete game of the season and had control from the start. He allowed just four hits over the first seven innings and fanned eight over that stretch. Meanwhile, the Bobcat hitters scored all seven runs through the first five innings. Frostburg State pounded out 13 hits and jumped on W&J early on. Zach Keeler led the Bobcats at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort with two runs and an RBI, while Ricky Brady was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

At Santander Stadium in York, Pa., Salisbury used a collective effort from the offense, the defense, and its pitching to earn an 11-1 victory over Mitchell in the first game of the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Sea Gulls jumped out of the gates quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding on two more in the second for an early 6-0 edge.

The Sea Gulls will now meet eighth-seeded Penn State Berks, a 5-4 upset winner over top-seeded Kean, on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Senior righthander Brett Collacchi tossed nine innings for Salisbury, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts and allowing just five hits and no earned runs. Collacchi is now one win away from tying the program record for career wins. Sophomore Pete Grasso led Salisbury offensively, notching a double and a triple with three RBIs and a run scored. Austin Barefoot and Tyler Hyrcak added two RBIs apiece for SU.
