Both Salisbury Hoop Teams Pull Upsets On The Road In Tuesday's Opening Round Of The 2008 CAC Basketball Playoffs

The sixth-seeded Salisbury women's basketball team surprised third-seeded St. Mary's, and the eighth-seeded SU men's team followed with a shocking upset of the regular-season champion York, highlighting Tuesday's opening round of the 2008 CAC basketball playoffs.

The Sea Gull squads joined the Marymount men's team, winners at Hood, to give the CAC three upset winners among the eight men's and women's quarterfinal round games Tuesday.

And there was almost a fourth upset as seventh-seeded Villa Julie men took second-seeded Mary Washington to overtime before the Eagles escaped with a three-point decision.

On the women's side, three of the top four seeds won by at least 30 points to advance to Thursday's (2/28) semifinals.   SU was the 79-78 upset-winner at St. Mary's on a game-winning hook shot by Kylie Hall with five seconds left in the contest.

Top-seeded Mary Washington, the No. 1 team in the region, topped eighth-seeded Hood (84-34) and will host fourth-seeded York at 6 p.m. in the opening game of a semifinal twinbill.  York advanced with a convincing win over fifth-seeded Wesley (88-53).

Second-seeded Marymount, the No. 2 team in the region heading into Wednesday's updated rankings, defeated seventh-seeded Villa Julie (71-37) and will host Salisbury Thursday at 7 p.m.

On the men's side, in what is believed to be the first time in any sport in the 18-year history of the Capital Athletic Conference, the eighth-seed beat a top seed in the quarterfinal round when Salisbury stunned regular-season champ York by a 76-71 count.

That gave St. Mary's a surprising home game in Thursday's semifinals.  The fourth-seeded Seahawks outlasted Wesley, 89-82, and will host SU at 7 p.m.

The other half of the bracket also recorded an upset with sixth-seeded Marymount topping Hood, 80-77, to earn a berth in the semifinals at Mary Washington (8 p.m.).  The Eagles needed overtime to avoid becoming the fourth higher-seeded casulty, escaping the pressure of seventh-seeded Villa Julie by a 74-71 margin.
