INTRODUCING ... Salisbury University Senior Men's Basketball Guard Devin Jones

Salisbury University senior men's basketball guard Devin Jones is a leader.  He was the top scorer for the Sea Gulls last season and is battling for the title again this year.

Jones, this week's CAC INTRODUCING ... featured student-athlete, is also the President of the SU and CAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a leader in helping freshmen adjust to college live on campus.  He hopes to be a leader in international politics following graduation.

What is your background in the sport you play? I started playing Basketball when I was about 10 or 11 years old.  Baseball was actually my first sport of choice until then.

What is your favorite spot on campus?  Maggs Physical Activities Center is definitely my favorite spot on campus. My sanctuary (the gym) is located there and this is where I go to get away from all the other distractions going on around campus.  The training room is in there as well where we have a good time with ATC's Pat, "King" Ken and Mo while icing. The Commons is a close second because my teammates and I can eat, watch TV and hangout for a while after a long practice.

Other than your team, what organization(s) do you participate in?  I am involved with Student Athletic Advisory Committee here at SU and the CAC where I am President of both. I got involved with SAAC my sophomore year at SU when coach volunteered me as a representative and I loved it.  The opportunity to become President came up and I had to take it because I love holding leadership positions. Along with that I am a Peer Leader helping incoming freshmen with orientation and making them feel comfortable when they first arrive here at SU in August. In the spring, I participate in Relay for Life helping to raise money for Cancer research.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students?  The most important issue facing college students is dealing with and overcoming the current state of our economy. There are a lot of kids graduating and having trouble finding jobs after already struggling to pay for their education. It is too late for our generation to reap the benefits, but it is important to make sure that our children don't suffer as well.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?  I am a Political Science major with a minor in Geography/GIS. While a part of the Political Science department, my focus is on the legal process and International politics which helped me to become more analytical and develop strong logic and debating skills. I added Geography as a minor because GIS is a rapidly rising technology and the program here at SU is top of the line.  I also enjoy using the same computer technology and programs that are used in the "real world."  My professors within the department forced me to pay attention to detail and helped with time management.

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life?   Without a doubt my best childhood friends' families. The Beverly's and the Ingram's helped my grandmother develop me into the person I am today. I didn't grow up with a father figure in my life so Mr. Beverly and Mr. Ingram provided that for me and I thank them so much for that. Mr. Beverly was also my youth basketball coach who developed my mental toughness and never quit attitude. The Ingram's also opened their home to me during my family's moving process in high school which allowed me to stay at my zone school. I couldn't thank them enough!

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?  In life you will ALWAYS get back what you put in; that applies to anything you do. I would also have to remind them of how much they have it made with no worries!

What is your favorite form of entertainment?  It's a tie between music and movies. I love music because I have a go-to song for every situation.  Whether I am listening to T.I's "Motivation" before a game or something random while walking to campus. Movies have always been and still are a big part of my family. My Mom and Grandma are always buying movies and we sit around and enjoy time together over a good movie.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team?  Other than the SU athletics department, I am a Dallas Cowboys fan and I am just a sports fan in general.  I love watching Devin Harris, Deron Williams, Tony Parker and Chris Paul play.  If there are sports on TV I am watching, but there is nothing like March Madness!

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with.  The first person would be God because I would like to thank him for allowing me to enjoy such a wonderful life. The second would be my Aunt Joyce who passed away my freshman year in high school. She was the glue of our family and losing her was devastating. I would love to be able to just see her face, spend time with her again and remind her of how much I love her. Last but not least, I would pick (former UCLA men's basketball) Coach John Wooden because he is the epitome of a winner. I would love to just talk basketball because he obviously has a wealth of knowledge about the game after winning 10 national championships.
