INTRODUCING ... Wesley Senior Men's Basketball Guard Jacques Bowe

To celebrate the holiday season, the Capital Athletic Conference INTRODUCING ... featured student-athlete is Wesley senior Jacques Bowe, a young man of deep faith who contributes in a variety of ways to his church, his school, his team and even his conference, where he serves as the Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

What is the background in the sport you play?  Before my freshman year in high school, I had no previous background in playing basketball other than backyard and street ball. I started playing basketball because after church services, all the kids would go to the back of the church and play basketball in their church clothes. From that experience, I developed a love for the game and continue playing basketball throughout high school. I started playing organized basketball freshman year in high school for Milford High School. After my freshman year, I decided to transfer to Sussex Technical High School where I met Coach Jerry Kobasa and Coach Joe Thomson. These gentlemen prepared me for success and hence why I am a collegiate athlete now.

What is your favorite spot on campus?  My favorite spot on campus is my room in Malmberg Hall. The reason my room is my favorite spot on campus is because throughout the day and the semester, I get a little stressed out because of the everyday pressures of being a student-athlete. Nevertheless, because I have a room to myself, I am able to temporarily forget about the worries of the world and relax until I choose to do otherwise.

Other than the team, what organization(s) do you participate in?  Organizations that I participate in on campus are: FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athlete's), SAAC  President (Student Athlete Advisory Committee - I'm also the Vice President of the CAC SAAC), RA (Resident Assistant in Malmberg Hall), Student Ambassador for Wesley College Admissions Office, Wesley College Gospel Choir, Vice President of Legal Society, Advisory Committee for the Legal Studies Committee and Student Life employee. Organizations that I participate in off campus are: Church (Pentecostal Church of God, Lincoln, DE), Drummer (Pentecostal Highlights), Drummer (Future Generation), Member of National Youth Department Planning Committee for PCOG Inc., and Volunteer Services at Old Manor Nursing Home in Milford, DE.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students?  The most important societal issue facing college students is the current status of our economy. Given that our economy is struggling and education lenders are cutting back on funding, students can no longer afford to pay for their education. This results in students putting their dreams on the line because of the weight of paying for college.

What was your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?  I am majoring in Legal Studies with a concentration in Political Science.  The most important thing I learned in this discipline is the importance of listening.  In this particular discipline, one word can change the whole meaning of a statement, argument or decision.  Paul Hegarty says it best, "when you are not listening you are not learning."

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life?  I wouldn't feel morally correct if I didn't say that God and my wonderful parents were the most influential in my life. Other than God and my parents, I would have to say my Pastor, Bishop Marion Hendricks. He has prepared me with the tools and ability to succeed. He has motivated not only me, but every youth in our congregation and embedded in us that we can do all things through Christ which strengthened us.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?   If I could give one piece of advice to elementary school students I would tell them to follow their dreams and never allow anyone to say that they cannot achieve that dream. Also, strive to do the very best in any and everything you put your mind to.

What is your favorite form of entertainment?   My favorite form of entertainment is having family time with my son. Other than that it is going to church and playing drums.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team?  My favorite sports team outside of the CAC is the best team in the UNIVERSE - the Dallas Cowboys.  My favorite athlete is Josh Howard from the Dallas Mavericks.

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with.  If I could have dinner with three people, the very first person I would like to have dinner with is God himself. I want to experience how it would feel to be in his presence. The second person I would like to have dinner with is President Obama. I would like to gather wisdom from him and I would like for him to express the responsibility he has on his shoulders and most of all how it feels being the president of the United States. Finally, I would love to have dinner with my brother who died a couple of days after he was born. I never had the opportunity to see him and I would want to have dinner with him to see how he looks and smiles.
