INTRODUCING ... York Senior Men's Basketball Guard Dylan Hoffman
York senior guard Dylan Hoffman, this week’s CAC INTRODUCING … featured student-athlete, is another in a long list of local basketball standouts that went on to solid careers for coach Jeff Gamber. Hoffman, a team tri-captain, is a strong passer and defender for the Spartans, who are again in the hunt for a CAC championship.
What is your background in the sport you play? My oldest brother Dustin was the best athlete in the family and he played basketball, football, track, and baseball so he really got me into all sports. I developed my game at the park by my house and at my neighbors’ hoop with a wooden backboard.
What is your favorite spot on campus (and why)? I don’t chill on campus often but when I do it is usually at the caf or Sparts Den to get one of the burritos I like.
Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in (on campus or off campus)? Team captains Andrew Pawlyk, Kevin Whaley and I are in SAAC (Student Athlete Advistory Committee). SAAC aims to use the student athletes at York to better the community. Recently we held Christmas with the Community, which is an event that brings several local families into the Grumbacher Center to receive gifts purchased by the student athletes and to partake in an evening of fun, games and great food.
Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career. There have been so many memories in the past four years, and my memory isn’t the best, but I’d have to say dishing the game winning assist to Nick Brady in the St. Mary’s game at home last year. After he hit that shot, the whole place went nuts.
What is the most important societal issue facing college students? The shrinking middle-class… The statistic varies depending upon who you talk to but supposedly 2% of the world’s population controls 98% of the wealth. That is like having a pie cut into 10 slices, and the first person taking 9 slices and leaving the other 9 people to fight over the last slice. There is no reason that the USA of all places should not have a thriving middle-class that consists of the majority of the population. Also, the overpopulation of the earth is a huge issue.
If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it? I would change the endless greed that occurs in corporations, businesses, and even governments today. Almost all issues in society can be traced back to someone being greedy. It’s hard to tell who can be trusted today - even our government and leaders of our country are some of the “shadiest” characters around.
What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline? My major is business administration, with a focus in human resources. I have learned that employees are the most important asset of any company and creating an atmosphere that is conducive to getting the job done is so important to success.
Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life (and why)? There have been way too many people that have influenced me in my life for the good or bad. To say that one person is the most influential in my life would be unfairly denying the credit that everyone else deserves. I would like to thank everyone, family, friends, and even enemies, for making me who I am today.
If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be? Don’t sweat the small stuff…Life is great, and to dwell on anything, no matter how big or little, is senseless. The past is gone, the future is ahead, everyday is like Christmas, because today is the present.
What is your favorite form of entertainment? In the spring, I like to play golf (and other outdoor games). When the weather is rough, I usually play Call of Duty (“COD”) with my roommates, Matt Moley and Andrew Pawlyk. Having practice or a game everyday, it’s nice to kick back and unwind while playing some COD and relaxing.
Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team (and why)? My favorite team is the Washington Redskins, I loved Sean Taylor (RIP). I used to love Clinton Portis but he’s been getting rusty. My favorite person to watch now would have to be Blake Griffin or Kevin Durant. Oh, and I’m (not a fan of) LeBron (James).
Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with? Tough question. I’d have to say my grandparents, Jack and Joan Hoffman, as well as Johnny Depp. I never met my grandfather as he passed before I was born. I would like to have dinner with him and my grandma because I miss her and I know she would be proud. Johnny Depp would probably be the third person just because he seems cool and he could pick up the tab!
