Junior Matt DiSalvo Leads Record-Setting Day For Christopher Newport At The 2015 CAC Golf Championships

Christopher Newport junior Matt DiSalvo drained a 16-foot put on the 18th hole to complete a record-setting day and lead the Captains to the lead midway through 2015 CAC Golf Championship Tournament at James River Country Club in Newport News, Va.

2015 CAC Tournament Day One Scores

Christopher Newport's top four players on the first day combined for a team score of 285, breaking the CAC record for one-day score and a one-day score in the CAC Championship.  The previous record was a 291 by CNU in a tournament at George Mason in 2014, and the championship tournament record was 295 by York on the way to winning the CAC title in 2010.

DiSalvo, who had three birdies on each nine, carded a six-under-par 64 on the first day of the 36-hole championship, breaking the CAC records for lowest score in CAC history and lowest score in CAC Championship history.  It was also the first time any CAC golfer posted a one-round total of six under par.  DiSalvo was a first-team all-conference golfer in 2014 after finishing sixth in the CAC championship tournament.

The defending CAC champion Captains finished Day One of the tournament with the top three scores on the leader board.  Following DiSalvo were sophomores Harry Nodwell with a one-over 71 and Charlie Peavley with a three-over 73.  CNU senior Ryan Pratt carded a 77 and ended the first round in eighth place.

Penn State Harrisburg, which is in second place at the mid-point of the tournament with a team score of 304, also posted three of the top six scores on the day.  Keith Miller (74) and Tyler Shank (75) are sitting in fourth and fifth place, respectively, among the individual leaders while Tyler Massar is tied for sixth with York's Ryan Wolbach, each with first-round scores of 77.

Shank tied for second place in the 2014 CAC Championship for the Lions, who tied for the seventh-best team score in CAC Championship history with their 24-over-par performance.

Three other players who finished among the top 10 players in Saturday's first round all carded 78, including CNU's Sam Robinson, Marymount's Brad Johnson and William Paterson's James Nuzzo.  Robinson finished fourth in the 2014 CAC Championship.

Following CNU and Penn State Harrisburg in the team standings is York in third place (320) and a three-team battle for fourth place between William Paterson (333), Marymount (338) and Wesley (339).  New Jersey City is in seventh place in the team standings.
