INTRODUCING ... Marymount Junior Men's Lacrosse Scoring Specialist Drew Phillips

Marymount University junior Drew Phillips, this week's CAC INTRODUCING ... featured student-athlete, has been one of the top scorers for the Saints' men's lacrosse teams the past three years and is already among the career-leaders in team history. He led MU in scoring as a sophomore (32 goals, 37 points) and ranked second as a freshman and this year. He's already 10th on the team's career goals list with 66 and is just 14 points shy of being the 14th player in team history to reach the century mark in his career.

What is your background in the sport you play? I started playing lacrosse when I was seven years old. Growing up it was always my favorite thing to do. I can remember going outside at 9 p.m. with my two older brothers even while there was snow on the ground in December. We would line up our parents cars so their headlights lit up our goal in the back yard. It's been in my life for a long time and I just enjoy playing the game.

What is your favorite spot on campus? My favorite spot on campus has to be the backfield. At times, I'll be the only one out there and it's just relaxing to go and shoot or throw on the wall and let everything go. It's a very effective way for me to clear my mind and decide where my focus really needs to be. At other times, during the day it's the most popular spot on campus, especially in the spring. Everyone wants to be outside either just hanging out enjoying the weather, playing football or Ultimate Frisbee. It's one of the easiest ways to meet people on campus.

Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in (on campus or off campus)? On campus the organization I'm most involved in is SAAC, serving as the Vice President. It's the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, a group of student-athletes from each team that meets to discuss different needs for student-athletes specifically and how to get them involved in the community.

Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career. The most memorable experience of my collegiate athletic career so far was scoring my first goal as a freshman. I started the first game I ever played in and I can still feel the butterflies I had before the game. It was an away game against Christopher Newport. I remember our team transitioning the ball from our defense at the very beginning of the game, and I was carrying the ball to X but the defenseman pressed out on me so I just rolled back, attacked the goal, came around and stuck the ball top right. I could feel my hands shaking from the adrenaline rush as I waited for the faceoff that followed.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students? I think the cost of college is probably the most important issue. For those that think getting into college is hard, wait until they have to figure out how to pay for it.

If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it? I would erase the national debt. I think it would help in the now and for future generations. I would start by making a budget that didn't involve borrowing money. Then I'm not sure what else to do, but clearly I'm not the first one to be stumped by this problem.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline? I'm a Health Science major. I enjoy knowing how the body works and experimenting with different modalities to increase human performance. Playing sports gives me the opportunity to work out different methods on myself, and some of my willing teammates, who just want to get better.

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life? I think that would be my high school lacrosse coach Milt Rodriguez. I always wanted to play in college but I didn't think it was actually going to be possible. He helped me a lot with preparing for the next level and just learning what it took to be a leader.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be? Have fun while you still get recess, enjoying being a kid. The rest will all go by too fast.

What is your favorite form of entertainment? I love watching live sports. I don't think anything beats it. It's unscripted and when you're watching two quality teams it can be unpredictable. If you're lucky, what you're watching has the potential to special.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team? My favorite sports team is the Philadelphia Eagles. It's just the team my oldest brother Tyler and I picked when we were younger and we've stuck with them to become pretty intense fans.

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with?

Nick Phillips - He's my older brother but he passed away when I was 16.

President Obama - I think it'd be cool to sit down and talk about sports and the world with him. Plus, not many people can say they had dinner with the President of the United States.

Ender Wiggin - He is a fictional character in a series by Orson Scott Card. It was my favorite science fiction series and really got me into reading in my free time. I've probably read each novel three times.
