St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Coach Chris Hasbrouck Accepts New Position in Texas
After nearly a decade at St. Mary's, Seahawk head men's lacrosse coach Chris Hasbrouck has accepted the position of head varsity boys lacrosse coach, wellness instructor, and student advisor at Episcopal High School in Bellaire, Texas, a city within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area, effective August 15.
"Chris has been a tireless worker and a steady leader of our men's lacrosse program during his tenure here. He has done a fantastic job building the roster numbers up and creating the depth we need to compete at the highest level in D-III. Chris has also had tremendous success in the areas of team academic performance, fundraising, and alumni relations," expressed Director of Athletics and Recreation Scott Devine. "What he has ultimately done over the years is built a true, comprehensive program around the men's lacrosse team. We will certainly miss his leadership and experience."
Hasbrouck spent seven seasons at the helm of the Seahawk men's lacrosse program after assuming the top position prior to the 2009 season. Before taking over, he had served as an assistant men's lacrosse coach as well as a strength and conditioning coach at St. Mary's during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years.
The Suffern, N.Y. native guided the Seahawks to a seven-year record of 58-53 (31-20 CAC), including collecting the program's third Capital Athletic Conference championship title in 2013. In his first season, Hasbrouck earned 2009 CAC Coach of the Year honors after leading St. Mary's to the CAC tournament semifinals (No. 2 seed) and the program's first win over Salisbury University in 32 years.
Hasbrouck wrapped up his fifth season in 2013 by guiding the Seahawks to one of their best finishes in the program's history. St. Mary's posted a 12-7 overall record, tying for second most wins all-time. Along with the CAC title, SMCM made its first NCAA Tournament appearance after a 13-11 win over two-time defending CAC and national champion, Salisbury, on Salisbury's home field for the conference crown.
He coached six USILA All-Americans, seven USILA Scholar All-Americans, and five USILA North-South Senior All-Stars as well as 16 Seahawks to 24 All-Capital Athletic Conference awards, including 12 first team selections.
Hasbrouck stated, "For the past 9 years, I have been very fortunate to have called St. Mary's home. The friendships and relationships that were built will be long-lasting. I especially want to thank Scott Devine for being a friend and mentor. His leadership, judgement, and confidence in me were unparalleled. Over the course of the past 7 years we excelled in the classroom and had many memorable moments on the field. I'm extremely proud of everything the players accomplished; we played with heart, honor, and dignity. Thank you to all of the parents whose sons I've been honored to coach and to all of the alums for their support. I look forward to following the progress of the team, as I feel they have the talent and potential to compete at the highest level."
"I would also like to thank everyone in the SMCM Athletic Department. It has been a pleasure working with everyone, and I wish all of you the best," added Hasbrouck.
Hasbrouck worked diligently to have his team work as hard in the classroom as they did on the field, mentoring 132 CAC All-Academic Team members, including a career-best 23 selections in his last season at the helm.
Devine concluded, "I want to thank Coach Hasbrouck for his years of dedicated service to the College. On a personal note, I will really miss working with Chris on a day to day basis. On behalf of our staff, our men's lacrosse players, and our men's lacrosse alumni base, we all wish Chris and his family nothing but the best as they transition to his new position in Houston, Texas."
A national search for Hasbrouck's replacement will begin immediately.
