Tyler King Named MVP After Scoring Twice In Stevenson's 3-1 Win Over Grove City In ECAC South Men's Soccer Championship Game
Playing his final collegiate game on his home field, Stevenson
men's soccer senior Tyler King totaled two goals
en route to earning Most Outstanding Player honors as the Mustangs
won the ECAC Division III South Championship with a 3-1 victory
over Grove City Sunday at Caves Athletics Complex.
After making its first postseason appearance in the program's
17-year history last season, Stevenson (13-5-3) has a record of
3-1-1 in the last two ECAC South tournaments.
The victory extended the Mustangs' unbeaten streak to seven overall
and nine-straight at home while marking the school's third ECAC
championship and first since May 14, 2006 when the men's lacrosse
team defeated Montclair State, 15-8 to capture the ECAC
Metro/South
Championship.
The men's lacrosse team also won an ECAC South Championship in
2003.
King totaled seven points on three goals and one assist in this
year's tournament in earning Most Outstanding Player honors.
Sophomore Ansger Otto totaled 11 points on three
goals and five assists, including an assist on all three of
Stevenson's goals in Sunday's championship game.
Otto finishes his second season as the leading scorer in Division
III with 51 points on 18 goals and 15 assists. In 42 career games,
he has posted 73 points on 27 goals and 19 assists.
After combining on the game-winning goal in yesterday's semifinal
victory over Bethany (WV), King and Otto connected twice more to
start the game on Sunday as King scored back-to-back goals off
assists from Otto in the 13th minute and just 24 seconds into the
start of the
second half to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Adam Brewer picked up his fifth goal of the season in the 53rd
minute off a feed from Daniel Adams to cut the Wolverines' deficit
in half, but Otto found sophomore Ryan Pierce in
front of the goal off a throw-in for his first goal of the season,
giving Stevenson some insurance en route to the two-goal
victory.
Stevenson's 13 wins are the second-most in school history trailing
only the 2005 team that went 15-4-1 en route to a NEAC
championship.
Junior Ryan Flannelly totaled three saves while
Chris Burgan also had three for Grove City (14-5-2).
