Frostburg State Men's Soccer Stops Marymount, 3-0, To Clinch The #4 Seed In The CAC Tournament

Frostburg State gained a 3-0 win at Marymount Tuesday to clinch fourth place and the No. 4 seed in the 2011 CAC men's soccer tournament, which begins Saturday.

The Bobcats secured a home game in the opening round of the CAC tournament against either Stevenson or Wesley.

If Stevenson closes out the regular season Wednesday against Salisbury with a win, the Mustangs will be the fifth seed and play at FSU.

If Salisbury wins, or the game ends in a tie, Wesley will be the fifth seed and play at FSU while Stevenson would gain the No. 6 seed and visit third-seeded York Saturday in a first-round playoff contest.

Salisbury previously clinched the regular-season title and top seed in the tournament while Mary Washington is the second seed in the playoffs.  Both the Sea Gulls and Eagles gain first-round byes and will host semifinal playoff games on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

The championship game is slated for Nov. 5 at the home field of the top-seeded team advancing through the semifinals.

Tuesday at Marymount, Frostburg State capitalized on a pair of first half opportunities to earn a 3-0 win.  The victory is the fourth shutout win of the season for the Bobcats, who cap their regular season at 10-2-4 overall and 4-2-2 in the league.   Junior Ryan Russell added to his league-leading goal total with two first-half scores. He now has 15 goals on the season, seven ahead of the next closest player.  Russell scored his first goal just 5:29 into the contest and found the net on free kick from 25 yards out in the 14th minute. Frostburg held the same 2-0 lead at halftime.  Junior Shawn Baker, who was credited with an assist on the game's first score, pushed the Bobcats' lead to a comfortable three goals (3-0) in the 60th minute with his second goal of the season.  Despite being shutout, Marymount held the offensive edge with an 18-10 lead in shots. Bobcat keeper Abiye Jack tied a season-high with eight saves for the win.
