Top Two Seeds - Salisbury And York - Advance To 2013 CAC Men's Soccer Title Match

Top Two Seeds - Salisbury And York - Advance To 2013 CAC Men's Soccer Title Match

For the seventh time in the last eleven years, Salisbury and York will meet in the CAC men's soccer championship game Saturday.  York will be aiming for its fifth-straight CAC title, and Salisbury will be looking to top the Spartans in the championship game for the first time since 2007.

Salisbury, the 2013 regular-season champion, earned the right to host the championship game with a 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded Frostburg State in Wednesday's playoff semifinal match.  Junior captain Steven Poorman scored the only goal of the match in the 81st minute.

York, the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, trailed Christopher Newport 2-0 and was shorthanded with 20 minutes remaining in regulation, but scored twice in a 41-second span to even the match.  The teams eventually went to a shootout, which the hosts won by a 3-1 margin.

Salisbury and York have combined to win every CAC men's soccer crown since 2002.  YCP has won six championships in that stretch, including the last four, while Salisbury captured the hardware from 2002-04 and again in 2007 and 2008.

Salisbury is ranked #3 in this week's NCAA South Atlantic Region poll while the Spartans are #4.  The Gulls won the regular-season meeting by a 1-0 margin.

In addition to the CAC crown and automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, the winner of the match will tie Mary Washington for the most men's soccer championships in CAC history.  UMW won the title the first seven years of the CAC (1991-97) and again in 2001.
