Christopher Newport Downs Mary Washington 1-0 in CAC Men's Soccer Championship

Christopher Newport edged Mary Washington 1-0 to claim its second CAC Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday night in Newport News, Va. The Captains' previous CAC title occured in the 2014 season. 

With the victory, the Captains earned the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Monday at 1 p.m. EST. The Captains, ranked 24th in the nation, improved to 17-2-1 with the win, while the Eagles slipped to 14-4. 

CNU notched the game's lone score in the 12th minute of play, as Andrew Gogolin finished a feed from Jordan Boone for his eighth goal of the season. 

The game was fairly even statistically, with both sides registering 12 shots and three corner kicks. UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer had five saves, while CNU goalkeeper Zach Pedini turned away four shots.
