Top Seeds Christopher Newport and Mary Washington Advance to CAC Men's Soccer Championship with Overtime Victories
Christopher Newport and Mary Washington advanced to the CAC men's soccer championship game with dramatic overtime victories in Tuesday's semifinal round. The top-seeded Captains will host the second-seeded Eagles on Saturday with the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament at stake. Game time is yet to be announced.
In Fredericksburg, Va., Mary Washington outlasted sixth-seeded York 2-1 in overtime on a game-winner from sophomore Jack Saslowsky in the 93rd minute. Saslowsky finished a corner kick from Mitchell Williams to propel the Eagles (14-3) to the title game for the first time since 2012 and the 14th time in program history. The Spartans end the season at 8-9-2.
Under the lights in Newport News, Va., Christopher Newport advanced to its second title game since joining the CAC with a 2-1 double-overtime triumph over fifth-seeded Frostburg State.
With 3:39 remaining in the game before penalty kicks would decide the outcome, sophomore Stephen Durbin connected on a sensational diving goal to win the game off an assist from Andrew Gogolin and Daniel Zeitoun. The Captains (16-2-1) last advanced to the title game in 2014, when they defeated Penn State Harrisburg for the CAC crown. With the loss, the Bobcats conclude the year at 9-10-1.
