Christopher Newport Rolls Past Montclair State in NCAA Men's Soccer First Round
Christopher Newport received goals from four different players en route to a 5-1 victory over Montclair State in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday night in Grantham, Pa. on the campus of Messiah.
With the win, CNU (18-2-1) advances to Sunday's second round, where they will meet host Messiah (18-0-3) at 5 p.m. Messiah defeated Centenary (N.J.) 6-0 in the other first-round matchup in Grantham.
CNU jumped on top of Montclair State early, as Zachary Ballard finished a cross from Stephen Durbin in the second minute of play. The Redhawks answered just over a minute later, but Jimmy Grace put the Captains back on top for good in the ninth minute, finishing a penalty kick for the first of his two scores on the day.
After halftime, Andrew Gogolin, Grace, and Sammy Blosser found the back of the net to break the contest open for the Captains.
