Mary Washington Dominates 2nd Day Of CAC Swim Championships, Builds 200-Plus Point Leads In Both Men's And Women's Standings

The Mary Washington men's and women's swim teams put another dominant performance on display Saturday in the second day of competition at the 2011 CAC Swim Championships, building leads of more than 200 points in both the men's and women's team standings heading into Sunday's final day of competition.

The UMW men's swim team won six of seven events Saturday, including both relays, building the number of gold medals this weekend to 11 in 12 events.  Senior Steve Clendenin, junior Austin Clark and sophomore Nick Eckhoff each won their second individual medals for the Eagles, who have 666 points in the standings, well ahead of second-place York (373).

The first non-UMW swimmer to win a men's event in this year's championship was St. Mary's sophomore Cameron Hedquist, who won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.83.

The Eagles women's team won five of seven events, including the second individual gold of the weekend for senior Sarah Crockett.  UMW's two-day total of 640 heading into Sunday's final day of the championship is more than 200 points ahead of second-place St. Mary's (422).

Two other swimmers - Marymount junior Anna Macedonia and St. Mary's sophomore Kelly Heyde - also posted their second individual wins of the season.  Macedonia took top honors in the 100 backstroke (57.21) after winning the 50 freestyle Friday.  Heyde touched the wall first Saturday in the 400 IM (4:28.94) after capturing gold in the 200 IM Friday.

Mary Washington build its leads not only by winning 17 of 24 events, including all eight relay races, but dominating the championship races with depth.  Other winners for the Eagles Saturday included Adriana Lesiuk in the women's 100 butterfly (57.97), Megan DeSmit in the women's 100 breaststroke (1:06.92) and William Norfolk in the men's 100 butterfly (50.45).
