Anderson Named Athlete Of The Year After Leading Mary Washington To Its 13th-Straight CAC Men's Swim Title
Mary Washington's Hugh Anderson broke nine records over the weekend on the way to winning the CAC Men's Swimming Athlete of the Year award and leading the Eagles to their 13th-straight conference championship.
UMW compiled 1,028 points to easily outdistance second-place host St. Mary's (656) for the crown. York edged Salisbury in the final relay of the championship, which lifted the Spartans to third place in the team standings with 407 points - just ahead of Salisbury's 403. Marymount was fifth with 244 while Frostburg State was sixth with 152.
Anderson set the conference record in the 200 butterfly (1:46.21), then swam the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay to complete his award-winning weekend.
York's Kyle Walthall was named the 2013 CAC Rookie of the Year while Salisbury's Jill Stephenson was picked by her peers as the CAC Coach of the Year.
UMW freshman Zachary Eisig started Sunday night's competition with a win in the 1,650 freestyle (16:31.06), followed by Eagle senior Nick Eckhoff winning his third individual goal medal of the weekend, this time in the 200 backstroke (2:50.54).
Sophomore Matt Arnold kept the UMW win streak going by touching the wall first in the 100 freestyle (47:09). UMW senior Peter Slattery (2:07.12) then edged Walthall (2:07.24) in the 200 breaststroke to enable Anderson to finish the clean sweep of gold medals for UMW on Sunday.
