Mary Washington Completes Undefeated Regular Season; Final Men's Tennis Playoff Seeds To Be Determined Today At Hood
Mary Washington swept a men's tennis doubleheader Thursday, including a 7-2 decision against CAC foe St. Mary's, to complete its 2011 CAC schedule as undefeated regular-season champions and the top seed in the upcoming CAC playoffs.
Also Thursday, York picked up a 7-2 victory at Stevenson to set up a crucial doubleheader at Hood Friday.
St. Mary's (3 p.m.) and York (6 p.m.), both tied for third place and one-half game behind second-place Salisbury, close out the regular-season at Hood. If SMC and YCP both win against the Blazers, it will create a three-way tie for second place which will be broken by a coin flip after the Hood match vs. York. Hood can still make the CAC playoffs if they win both matches.
The 2011 CAC men's tennis playoffs begin Saturday with two first-round matches. Top seeded Mary Washington will get a bye and host a semifinal match Monday. Frostburg State is the only other team that is set with its seed (5th) and will play a road match Saturday at a site to be determined Friday at Hood.
Thursday at UMW, the Eagles defeated Christopher Newport , 6-3, and St. Mary's , 7-2, on Thursday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 14-9 overall, and 7-0 in CAC play. Will Apperson and Kevin Aquino were two-time singles winners for UMW.
At Stevenson, York picked up a 7-2 triumph over host Stevenson. The Spartans improve their 2010-2011 overall record to 10-6 including a 4-2 record in the CAC while the Mustangs drop to 5-10 and 2-5 in league play.
The Green and White opened play by taking two of the three doubles matches. In the top spot, the duo of Travis Klein and Colin Jones snagged an 8-6 triumph to grab the point for York. Third doubles went to the solid tandem of Ryan Harvey and Justin Hostetter. The pair, who have now posted a Spartan-best 8-4 doubles record this season, won their match by an 8-2 result. York then went on to own five of the six singles matches, each of which came in straight sets.
