Higher Seeds St. Mary's And York Hold Serve In CAC Men's Tennis Tournament First Round Action

Third-seeded St. Mary's held off sixth-seeded Frostburg State, 6-3, while fourth-seeded York downed fifth-seeded Stevenson, 7-2, in Sunday's opening round of the 2011 CAC men's tennis playoffs.

The Seahawks will play at second-seeded Salisbury in Monday's semifinal match while the Spartans will play at top-seeded Mary Washington in the other semifinal match.

Monday's (4/18) winners will advance to Thursday's (4/21) championship game, to be played on the home courts of the higher-seeded team.

At St. Mary's, the Seahawks were led by John Feighner and Jay Guzzone, who combined to win the No. 2 doubles match, then gained victories at No. 4 (Feighner) and 5 singles (Guzzone) to lead SMC to a 6-3 win over Frostburg State.  Lukas Iraola was also a double-winner for SMC.  Mike Stevenson was a two-time winner for FSU at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with Aaron Littlejohn.

At York, the Spartans bested visiting Stevenson 7-2 at Wisehaven Swim & Tennis Club in York. Following that playoff tilt, the Spartans hosted Washington College in a make-up match from a postponed date during regular season as Washington won 8-1. For the season, the Spartans now stand at 12-7 overall and advance to the CAC Tournament's semifinal round where they are set to visit Salisbury on Monday, April 17.

The Green and White got on the board with a pair of doubles triumphs to begin the match against Stevenson. Four seniors grabbed the doubles wins for York as Travis Klein and Colin Jones paired up in first doubles while Ryan Harvey and Justin Hostetter combined in the third spot. Klein and Jones snagged an 8-5 victory while Harvey and Hostetter's 8-1 triumph allowed them to secure their team-high 10th win together this year.

Singles action saw the Green and White sweep the second through sixth slots in straight sets.
