Mary Washington And Salisbury Post Shutout Wins In Semifinal Round To Advance To 2011 CAC Men's Tennis Championship Match
For the sixth-straight year, since the current playoff format was instituted prior to the 2006 season, Mary Washington and Salisbury will meet for the 2011 CAC Men's Tennis championship.
Top-seeded Mary Washington downed fourth-seeded St. Mary's, 9-0, and second-seeded Salisbury topped third-seeded York, also by a 9-0 score, to advance to Thursday's championship match in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles, ranked 5th regionally and 25th nationally, registered 8-0 shutouts at both second and third doubles on the way to a 3-0 team lead heading into singles action. UMW then swept the six singles points in straight sets.
At Salisbury, the Sea Gulls picking up a 9-0 victory against third-seed York. The second-seeded maroon and gold (15-6) received strong performances across the board as they picked up their eighth shutout victory of the season. One of those fine efforts came from junior Daniel Barnas, who earned his third No. 1 singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of York's (12-8) Travis Klein. Additionally, sophomore Henry Stuhler's 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles preserved his undefeated 2011 season.
