Five CAC Men's Track & Field Teams Compete on Saturday; Three Participate in CNU's New Captains Classic
Five of the six CAC men's track & field squads competed over the weekend, with three of the teams at the New Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport at Pomoco Stadium. The trio of teams - Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and Salisbury - will return to Pomoco Stadium from May 3-4 for the 2014 CAC Outdoor Championships.
At CNU, the host Captains' Richard Roethel set five facility marks during the decatholon. In the combined event, Roethel bettered his own facility record after finishing the decathlon with 6,723 points. That showing not only marks the finest in the history of Pomoco Stadium, but it also ranks fourth in the NCAA. Incredibly, the senior won eight of the 10 disciplines, including four new facility marks. Daniel Richard won the 3000m steeplechase in 9:32.98, while John LaPointe captured victory in the 5000 with a time of 15:28.61. In other victorious efforts, Dominique Torres, Daulton Teaford, Robert Mayes, and Troy Newcomer teamed up to take the 4x100 in 42.58. Torres also posted the top effort in the triple jump with a 14.08-meter leap.
For Mary Washington, freshman Glenn Taylor finished second in the 100 meters at 10.94, Matt Shaughnessy was second in the 1500 meters at 4:06.39, and Ian Granger was second in the 3000 meters at 9:14.50. The 4x100 meter relay finished third at 43.28 seconds, and the 4x400 relay finished second at 3:23.70. Nick Judy took second in the pole vault at 14'-3.25".
Salisbury claimed the top two spots in the discus with junior Jeffrey Jordan grabbing the top spot with a top distance of 137'-4". Senior Nathan Austin earned a win by nearly half a second in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 4:05.94. In just his second 110-meter hurdles race of the outdoor season, sophomore Luke Campbell won the event, with a time of 14.72 seconds, which is among the top-10 times in the nation this season.
Frostburg State collected six wins and finished second place overall at the Mason-Dixon Invitational at Gettysburg College, Saturday. FSU collected 174.5 points and finished behind host and winner Gettysburg, which registered 208 points. Sophomore J.R. Lowery led the way with a pair of wins for the Bobcats, hitting ECAC qualifying mark in the shot put (14.52m) and won the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 47.57 meters. Junior Devin Francillon won the 400-meter hurdles (56.67), junior Curtis Buckland picked up a win in the discus and qualified for the ECAC Championships at 44.41 meters and junior Chris Rickell earned a win in the high jump at 1.85 meters. .
York competed at the Greyhound Invitational hosted by Moravian. Darnell Tillman posted a pair of top-five finishes for the Spartans, taking third in the 200 meters (22.49) and fifth in the 100 meters (11.16). Ryan Banta claimed fourth in the 100 at 11.12.
