Salisbury Edges Christopher Newport For Fourth Straight CAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Title
Salisbury won eight of 16 events en route to capturing its fourth straight CAC Men's Indoor Track & Field title on Saturday at the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport. The Sea Gulls totaled 147.33 points to edge out second-place Christopher Newport (130.33) for the title.
York claimed third with 71 points, Wesley took fourth with 60.33 points, Mary Washington claimed fifth (43), Frostburg State finished sixth (37) and Penn State Harrisburg (6) rounded out the team scores.
Junior Luke Campbell led Salisbury with three individual first-place finishes and a relay win, with all four wins as record-breaking performances. Campbell set a new conference and championship meet record in the 400 meters at 49.26, breaking his own record in both. He also broke his own championship meet mark in the 60-meter hurdles (7.93) and set a new meet record in the 200 meters (22.35).
In the last event of the meet, Campbell anchored the 4x400 relay to a win along with Zach Schmelz, Eric Halton and Jerel Madison to a conference and championship meet record time of 3:22.94, capping off the Sea Gulls team title in style.
Salisbury senior Thomas Burke also set a new CAC Championship meet record in the mile run, crossing first with a time of 4:17.54. Other winners for the Sea Gulls included Tyler Austin in the 60 meters (6.93), Ryan DiPascale in the shot put (52'-08.00") and Dylan Burkett in the weight throw (53'-09.00").
Christopher Newport claimed four first-place finishes to nab second place in the team standings. In the field events, Dominique Torres won the triple jump at 47'06.50" and Wesley Shrieves won the long jump at 22'-08.50". In the track events, Jeffrey Dover raced to gold in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.33, while the distance medley relay squad of Dover, John Bruner, Zachary Campbell and Samuel Martin secured first in 10:40.58.
York's Michael Stetson set a new championship mark in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:10.76, breaking former teammate Tim Hartung's mark of 15:27.05 set at the 2013 meet.
Mary Washington's Ben Sorensen was just .02 shy of breaking the meet record in the 3,000 meters, crossing first in 8:50.26. Nick Judy also grabbed a gold medal for the Eagles, winning the pole vault with a mark of 13'-11.25".
Frostburg State's Collin Schultz claimed the lone first-place finish for the Bobcats, leaping 6'-06.00" in the high jump to grab top honors.
