Salisbury And Mary Washington Advance In the Winner's Bracket To Third Round Of CAC Softball Tournament

Top-seeded Salisbury and second-seeded Mary Washington picked up victories Thursday to advance in the winner's bracket of the 2012 CAC Softball Tournament.

The 17th-ranked Sea Gulls (33-5) broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to gain a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded York (11-21), knocking the Spartans out of the double-elimination tournament.

Mary Washington (24-16) gained an 8-0 five-inning decision over third-seeded Frostburg State  (21-15) to advance to a third-round showdown against Salisbury, to be played Saturday at 11 a.m.

In Thursday's third playoff game, fifth-seeded Stevenson (15-21) posted a 9-1 victory over sixth-seeded Hood (8-29), eliminating the Blazers from the chase for the title.  The Mustangs will advance to Saturday's action at Salisbury against Frostburg State, beginning at 1 p.m.

At Salisbury, Md., the No. 17-ranked Sea Gulls advanced to the third round of the CAC tournament after eliminating York Thursday. The Sea Gulls scored four runs off four hits in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie, edging the Spartans 5-1.  Salisbury (33-5) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off senior Casey Zaino's double to left-center field, plating sophomore Molly Gigioli, but the Spartans (11-21) evened the score at one a piece, taking advantage of a Sea Gull error in the top of the third scoring Hannah Hugel.  Senior Erika Brittingham gave the Gulls the go ahead run in the fourth inning, driving a solo shot out past center field, her sixth home run of the year.  Junior Hannah Mills and Zaino followed the blast with back-to-back singles putting runners on first and second base. Junior Lindsay McCabe advanced Mills and Zaino with a sacrifice bunt allowing classmate Carly Read a chance to drive in a run with one out. Read did just that with a hard shot to York first baseman Sara Thacker. Thacker attempted to look Mills back at third base, but as she was about to tag first base for the out Mills broke for home, sliding in to avoid the tag of Spartan catcher Rachel Klein putting an additional run on the scoreboard, 3-1.  The Sea Gulls last two runs came off the bat of sophomore Harley Hill, who led the team with with two RBIs.  Brittingham (18-3) worked all seven innings for the maroon and gold allowing one run on two hits while striking out nine Spartan batters. The Georgetown, Del., native went 2-for-3 at the plate, adding a run and a RBI.

At Fredericksburg, Va., Mary Washington erupted for five runs in the first inning en route to a five-inning, 8-0 victory over third seeded Frostburg State University on Thursday in the second round of the CAC Tournament. The Eagles improve to 24-16 overall, and 2-0 in the tournament.  The Eagles bats came out on fire as they batted around the order in the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Junior catcher Kerry Busby led the team, picking up two hits including a bases-loaded double to knock in three runs. Senior Michelle Durnavich homered to right field to drive in the Eagles' final two runs in the third inning that proved to end the game early. Designated hitter Hannah Williams also had two RBI in the game. Freshmen pitcher Hannah Otterman threw five scoreless innings, surrendering only four hits while striking out five batters with no walks.

At Owings Mills, Md., Brittany Rynkowski had two hits and a walk, a run scored and four RBI in leading Stevenson to a 9-1 victory over Hood.  Kristin Urban also chipped in a hit, run scored and two RBI for the Mustangs, who scored three times in the third and added six more in the fourth.  Hood, which committed three errors in the contest, scored its lone run in the top of the fifth when Jackie Yurchak led off with the second of the Blazers' three hits and eventually scored on Amy Hagerdon's two-out sacrifice fly.
