Sunday's First FSU vs. Alvernia story

The Bobcats (33-12) capped one of the most successful seasons in school history with two wins over host and top-seeded Alvernia (37-10) on the final day of the tournament. FSU downed the Crusaders, 6-3, to get to the title game and only needed five innings to earn the championship trophy.

Frostburg pounded out 14 hits and scored in all four innings in which it needed to bat. Alvernia plated two runs in the top of the fourth, but FSU was already ahead 8-0. The victors tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the Crusaders scoreless in their final at-bat in the fifth inning.

Junior Caitlin Lovend led the Bobcats at the plate and she was one of three players that were perfect in the title game. Lovend finished 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs and two doubles. She smacked a two-run double to left in the first inning and followed it up with a three-run double in the second.

Sophomore Bailey Ellsworth, hitting directly in front of Lovend in the lineup, was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored. She singled and later scored on both of Lovend's doubles in the first and second innings. She led off the fourth frame with her third single and scored when senior Shari Beavers drew a bases loaded walk. Beavers finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Starter Mary Ann Moore capped her stellar freshman season with her 20th win in the circle. She scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run in 5.0 innings. At the plate, Moore finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior Taylor Vandegrift finished with two runs, including the game's first score in the first inning, while senior Kerri O'Malley drove in two runs with a double in the third.

Frostburg, which entered the weekend ranked 13th in the nation in scoring, marched through the ECAC Tournament in only four games, outscoring its opponents a 33-9. The Bobcats pounded out 43 hits and committed just four errors.
