Christopher Newport Softball Tops Randolph-Macon, 11-6, To Advance To Super Regional Rematch Against Salisbury

Christopher Newport rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the third inning to secure an 11-6 victory over visiting Randolph-Macon, lifting the 11th-ranked Captains to its second-straight regional title and another Super Regional showdown against CAC rival Salisbury next weekend.

The 30-7 Captains rode the strong pitching of regional MVP Hanah Marshall and a 13-hit attack, which included home runs by Scoop Simon, Sabrina Hill and Rachael Payne, to rally for the win.

CNU, the CAC regular-season and playoff tournament champion, will travel to Salisbury for a best-of-three series on May 15-16, with the winner advancing to the eight-team NCAA Division III championship.

The Sea Gulls advanced by winning all three-games this weekend in a three-team regional at Salisbury against McDaniel (4-0) and Virginia Wesleyan (4-0 and 3-2).

The inter-CAC showdown is a re-match of the 2014 Super Regional, when SU won the first two games by scores of 6-4 and 8-7 on the way to advancing to the Division III national championship game.

This year, CNU has a 3-0 record against the Sea Gulls, including 7-1 and 13-2 wins on April 4 during the regular-season meeting at Salisbury, and a 7-4 decision in the CAC title game at Newport News on April 18.
