Salisbury Ousts Virginia Wesleyan, Advances to NCAA Softball Super Regional; Christopher Newport One Win Away from Rematch with Sea Gulls
Salisbury edged Virginia Wesleyan 3-2 to advance to the NCAA Softball Super Regional round for the second straight year, while Christopher Newport defeated Randolph-Macon 3-2 to put itself one win away from a Super Regional rematch with the Sea Gulls.
In Salisbury, Md., the fourth-ranked Sea Gulls overcame an early 1-0 deficit to 10th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan, tying things up in the fifth and plating the winning scores in the sixth for the 3-2 triumph. Hosting a three-team regional with the Marlins and McDaniel, Salisbury posted a 3-0 mark to qualify for the Super Regional round for the second straight season.
Annah Brittingham led the way at the plate for Salisbury with the eventual game-winning two-RBI double in the top of the sixth. Rachel Johnson improved to 24-5 on the mound for SU, allowing just four hits and striking out eight in the complete-game outing.
The Sea Gulls will meet the winner of the CNU Super Regional in a three-game series on May 15-16 with a spot in the World Series on the line.
In Newport News, Va., 11th-ranked Christopher Newport topped Randolph-Macon at Captains Park by a score of 3-2, putting the Captains one win away from spot in the Super Regional opposite Salisbury.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but CNU responded in the bottom half of the frame with a trio of runs. Rachael Payne started the scoring with an RBI single to center field, before a Tori Clarke single up the middle plated a pair of runs to give the Captains the 3-2 edge.
The one-run advantage was enough for starter Hanah Marshall, who tossed the full 7.0 innings and allowed just five hits and the two unearned runs while fanning three.
The Captains will meet the winner of Saturday's 4 p.m. matchup between Randolph-Macon and Salem on Sunday at noon.
