Salisbury Softball Remains in NCAA Regionals with Two Wins on Saturday; Christopher Newport Eliminated by Messiah

In the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament on Saturday, second-ranked Salisbury remained alive with a pair of wins, while 10th-ranked Christopher Newport fell twice to 11th-ranked Messiah and was eliminated from the postseason.

Salisbury needed two wins on Saturday to keep its 2016 season alive and remain in play in the Norfolk, Va. regional, including one against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation and the Sea Gulls did that with a 2-1 win against top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan and a 5-0 win against Saint Vincent.

The Sea Gulls will play again on Sunday, May 15 taking on Haverford College. The teams square off at noon, with Salisbury needing to win twice to claim the regional title. The Fords can claim the championship and advance to next week's super regional with just one win.

Christopher Newport's season came to a close Saturday, as the Captains dropped back-to-back games to 11th-ranked Messiah at Captains Park. The Falcons won the opener, 6-1, and then pulled out the nightcap, 5-4, to advance to the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament.

CNU's season comes to a close with a 35-9 final record. Messiah improved to 42-3 with the wins, and the Falcons have now won 18 straight games. Messiah will play in the round of 16 next weekend.
