Christopher Newport Softball Earns NCAA At-Large Bid, Will Host 3-Team Regional; Salisbury Headed to Virginia Wesleyan
NCAA Softball Tournament Bracket
CAC champion Salisbury learned its NCAA Tournament path early Monday afternoon, while runner-up Christopher Newport earned an at-large bid and will host a three-team regional this weekend at Captains Park.
Salisbury, which defeated CNU 2-1 in the CAC championship game, will travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a four-team regional hosted by the Marlins in Virginia Beach, Va. The Sea Gulls are making their 21st NCAA tournament appearance.
The Sea Gulls will take on Haverford in the opening round on Friday, May 13. The Fords earned the Centennial Conference's automatic bid into the tournament. The other first-round match pits Virginia Wesleyan and Presidents' Athletic Conference champions Saint Vincent.
The double-elimination event is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, May 15, with the advancing team heading to a best-of-three super regional next weekend against the advancing team out of a regional hosted by CNU.
At CNU, Captains Park will be one of 16 sites to host NCAA Softball Championship action beginning this Friday, May 13th. Christopher Newport, 34-7, will host Ferrum and Messiah in a three-team, double-elimination regional.
The Captains will be making their 14th NCAA appearance all-time, and the tenth straight trip to the tournament.
The action will begin on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as Messiah will play Ferrum. CNU will then play Ferrum in a 4:00 p.m. start.
Saturday, two more games will be played beginning at 2:00 p.m. when the Captains take on Messiah. If two teams remain following the first three games, the second game on Saturday, at 4:00 p.m., will serve as the Regional Championship. If the Championship is extended to two games in the double-elimination tournament, the deciding game would be played on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
If three teams remain following the first three games, CNU and Ferrum would match up in an elimination game on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and the winner would advance to a Regional Championship on Sunday at Noon.
