Frostburg State junior Allison Short, Salisbury senior Caitlin Lake, and Wesley sophomore Ashley Royer have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2017 Academic All-District Softball Teams, announced Thursday.

The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.

The CoSIDA Academic All-American Teams will be announced on Tuesday, May 23.

Short, a native of Hampstead, Md., carries a 3.92 grade point average with a major in athletic training. She has made the Dean's List in each of her five completed semesters at Frostburg and was voted to the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) All-Academic team three times. She was named the conference's Rookie of the Year in 2015 and was selected to the All-CAC First Team in 2016 and 2017. On the field, Short has been one of the top pitchers in the nation. She ended the 2017 campaign with 14 wins, 82 strikeouts and a 1.91 ERA. All of these marks ranked among the top three in the CAC. Short currently ranks second in school history in wins (38) and fifth in strikeouts (224) heading into her senior season.

A law and justice studies major at Wesley, Royer carries a 3.83 grade-point average. Royer earned second team All-CAC accolades in 2017 and ranked fourth in the CAC in runs batted in (40), tied for eighth in home runs (4) and tied for ninth in doubles (10). Royer tallied a .495/.500/.796 batting split in 2017. Royer was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week on March 1 and the CAC Player of the Week on Feb. 27.

Lake is a three-time member of the All-CAC Academic Team and was a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection last spring. Lake is a two-time All-CAC honoree, having earned second team honors this season and first team accolades in 2016. A centerfielder, Lake started all 38 games for the Sea Gulls with three outfield assists. At the plate, Lake had the team's third-highest batting average, hitting .371 this year with 15 extra-base hits for a .586 slugging percentage. Her 34 runs scored and her 31 runs driven in are both second on the team.
