Christopher Newport and Mary Washington to Meet in CAC Softball Championship Saturday
Top-seeded Christopher Newport and fifth-seeded Mary Washington are to collide in the CAC Softball Tournament Championship on Saturday at Captains Park after both advancing through Friday's action in Newport News, Va.
CNU downed second-seeded Frostburg State 3-2 in the opening game of day two, sending the Captains to the title game for the fourth straight year. The Captains need one win on Saturday to secure their third CAC title in the last four years.
In the first elimination game of day two, fifth-seeded Mary Washington scored three times in the top of the seventh to knock out fourth-seeded York, 6-5.
The Eagles then advanced to the championship with a dramatic 6-4 victory over Frostburg State in nine innings, eliminating the Bobcats from the tournament. Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Frostburg State rallied with two outs to even the score at 4-4, but the Eagles responded in the ninth with a pair of runs for the two-run victory. The championship game appearance is the first for UMW since 2009.
