Marymount Takes Control Of 2nd Place With Women's Basketball Win Over Visiting Frostburg State
Marymount and Wesley defended their home courts Wednesday against teams they're battling for high seeds in the upcoming CAC women's basketball playoffs.
The Saints (12-9, 10-5 CAC) moved into sole possession of second place in the CAC with a 53-38 victory over Frostburg State (53-38). Wesley (14-10, 9-6 CAC) downed York (12-12, 9-6 CAC) by a 54-50 count to move into a tie with the Spartans for third place.
All four teams have already qualified for the CAC playoffs and complete their regular season schedules on Saturday.
In other action Wednesday, regular-season champion Mary Washington (19-5, 14-1 CAC) gained a 55-36 decision at Stevenson (4-20, 2-13 CAC) while Salisbury (9-15, 6-9 CAC) kept its playoff hopes alive with a 63-57 victory at Hood (8-15, 3-13 CAC).
Marymount controls its own destiny. If the Saints win at Stevenson Saturday, they'll clinch the No. 2 seed, a first-round bye and a home game in the semifinal round of the 2011 playoffs.
If the Saints lose Saturday, a win by either Wesley (at Mary Washington) or York (home vs. Salisbury) - or both - will create a tie for second place.
If MU is tied with York, the Spartans have the advantage by virtue of a season sweep vs. the Saints. If MU is tied with Wesley, the Wolverines have the advantage because the teams split the season series, and each won one game vs. UMW, so the tiebreaker is decided by Wesley's split with York.
In a three-way tie, York gains the advantage with a 3-1 record against MU and Wesley while Wesley would be 2-2 in that grouping and Marymount would be 1-3.
If York and Wesley tie for third place, YCP earns the third seed with the season sweep vs. MU.
If there is a three-way tie for third between FSU, WC and YCP, the Spartans gain the nod with a season sweep vs. MU, and the Wolverines are next because they split the season series with the Saints. The teams go to the tiebreaker because FSU, WC and YCP all split their season series with each other.
Frostburg State (11-13, 8-7 CAC), which also had to forfeit a conference game Wednesday, enters Saturday's final day of the season in fifth place. The Bobcats could finish as high as a three-way tie for third place (or a two-way tie for fourth) by combining a win over St. Mary's and losses by either Wesley and York (or both). However, FSU loses tiebreakers against both the Wolverines or Spartans by virtue of losing twice this season to Marymount.
If St. Mary's defeats FSU Saturday, the Seahawks and Bobcats tie for fifth place. Saturday's SMC win would create a split in the season series, which would need to go all the way to the results against Salisbury before FSU gains the advantage with a season sweep against the Gulls.
If FSU downs SMC Saturday, and Salisbury finishes the season with a victory at York to create a tie for sixth place, the Sea Gulls would advance to the playoffs by virtue of a season sweep against the Seahawks.
In Wednesday's action, Marymount defeated visiting Frostburg State 53-38 in the regular season home finale. Seniors Amanda Billy and Beth Wiggins led the Saints with 12 points each while senior Maame Amponsah and junior Shannon Gough both added 10. Amponsah chipped in 16 rebounds for a double-double while Wiggins also posted one with 10 boards. Elaina Hummel led the Bobcats with 11 points, the only FSU player to score in double-figures.
At Stevenson, Mary Washington junior guards Jenna McRae and Katie Wimmer each scored 18 points to lead the Eagles to a 55-36 win, running their win streak to 13 games. McRae made 5-7 shots, including 3-4 three pointers, and went 5-5 from the line, and also added eight rebounds. Wimmer was 6-10 form the floor, including 2-4 three pointers, and went 4-4 from the line. In all, UMW shot 42% from the field, and outrebounded the Mustangs, 44-26. The Eagles, among national leaders in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, held Stevenson to 10 field goals on 48 attempts.
At Hood, three Salisbury players scored at least a dozen points on the way to a 63-57 road win, staying alive in the battle for the final CAC tournament berth. Nicole Sisco was one of Salisbury's top performers on the night, putting up 16 points to go with nine rebounds. Junior Glen Charlton scored 17 points to lead the Gulls while Chante' McKinney finished with 12. Katie McGahagan pulled down 13 rebounds and scored seven points.
At Wesley, Wolverine senior Cory Boyd led all scorers as she celebrated Senior Night in Dover with 22 points while fellow senior Angie Owens recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Wesley has now won seven straight as they are making a late-season run. Freshman Brittany Hicks led the Green and White with 18 points in the loss.
