Wesley And York Pull Off Road Upsets In Thursday's CAC Women's Basketball Semifinals; Spartans Will Host Wolverines In Title Game Saturday

For the first time in CAC women's basketball history, the top two teams from the regular season will both be on the sidelines during the championship game.

Third-seeded York and fourth-seeded Wesley pulled off the semifinal upsets Thursday and will meet Saturday at 2 p.m. for the 2011 title and a bid to the NCAA championship tournament.

The Spartans (15-12) will host the championship game for the second time in three seasons after a record-setting 37-32 semifinal victory at second-seeded Marymount (13-10).  It's the first time in YCP history recording three wins over the Saints in the same season.

York will be playing in the CAC championship game for the third time in seven years and looking for its first crown.  In 2004, YCP fell to Marymount (76-53), and in 2009, the Spartans had a 25-game win streak snapped in a title game setback at the Grumbacher Center vs. Mary Washington (67-56).

York posted the lowest win total in a CAC playoff contest, topping the previous record set by Catholic University an a 2003 46-42 victory over St. Mary's.  The combined scoring total of the Spartans and Saints (69 points) was five points off the record for lowest combined points in a CAC playoff game, set in a 1998 first-round contest when St. Mary's defeated Goucher, 53-11.  MU's score Thursday tied for the third-lowest single game total in a CAC playoff game.

Wesley also advanced to the title tilt by knocking off regular-season champion Mary Washington, 54-53.  Wesley will be making its first championship game appearance since joining the CAC for the 2008 season while the Eagles snapped a string of six-straight years advancing to the CAC championship game, which included four titles.

York and Wesley played two close games during the regular season, each successfully defending home court.  The Spartans gained a 61-54 victory in York on Dec. 1, 2010 (the first night of conference play in the regular season), and Wesley bounced back on Feb. 16 with a 54-50 victory in Dover, Del.

At Fredericksburg, Va., Wesley's Angie Owens dropped in a layup for her team-high 18th point with 13 seconds left, and UMW missed a last-second attempt, to give the Wolverines the victory.  Allison Beddia added 15 scores for the winners.  The Eagles (21-6), ranked No. 6 in the Division III Atlantic Region, were led by junior guard Katie Wimmer, who had 17 points and eight rebounds.

At Arlington, Va., York advanced to the championship despite hitting just 21.3% from the field (10-for-47), 25% from three-point range (4-for-16), 59.1% from the free throw line (13-for-22) and being outrebounded by 10 (42-32).

Freshman Brittany Hicks, whose only two field goals were from long range, scored a team-best 11 points and led a stellar defensive effort for the Spartans.  Marymount was led by senior Beth Wiggins, who had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds with three assists, a block and a steal.
