Wimmer And McRae Lead Mary Washington To 2012 CAC Women's Basketball Crown
Senior guards Katie Wimmer and Jenna McRae combined for 29 points and hit key free throws in the final minute to lead Mary Washington to a 50-46 victory over York in the 2012 CAC Women's Basketball Championship Game.
The seventh-ranked Eagles (27-0) won their fifth team championship in the last eight - first since 2009 - and clinched an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Championship Tournament.
The Spartans (22-5), who finished second in the regular season, were in the championship game for the third time in the last four years. YCP will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans' only losses are to three nationally-ranked teams - UMW (three times), William Paterson and Johns Hopkins.
Wimmer, who dished out five of UMW's 11 assists, registered a team-best 15 points, including 11 in the first half and the last two at the free throw line with 10 seconds left in the game to give UMW its four-point margin of victory.
McRae added 14 points and was second on the team with eight rebounds. She scored seven points in each half, including a three in the final minute of the first half that gave the hosts their first lead of the game and followed by hitting the front end of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds left that gave the Eagles a 48-46 advantage.
Sophomore point guard Sam Partonen was also key for UMW, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds, adding three assists and leading UMW's strong defensive effort.
York was led by sophomore forward Kristen Haley, who shared game-high scoring honors with 15 points, including nine in the first half. She also shared team-leading rebounding honors with Brittany Hicks (eight points), each siwht six caroms.
Sophomore point guard Aja Wallpher, the only player to stay on the court the entire 40 minutes of the game, added 13 points, four steals and three assists.
Mary Washington took control of the game in the second half on the glass, outrebounding the visitors by a 22-11 margin in the final 20 minutes. UMW finished the game with a 40-28 advantage on the boards.
The Eagles also held York scoreless from long range in the second half on seven tries.
