Marymount Loses At Future CAC Rival Christopher Newport In Second Round Of NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament
Marymount University’s women’s basketball team fell
56-50 to host Christopher Newport in the Second Round of the NCAA
Tournament on Saturday night. The Saints close out the season 24-5
overall after making their 17th appearance in the NCAA
Tournament.
Tynisha Parks led the Saints with 18 points on
7-of-9 shooting to go with six rebounds and four steals.
Kievanna Lacey added 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting
and chipped in three steals.
Katelyn Fischer scored six points to go with eight
assists and five rebounds. Miranda Krott led the
Blue and White with eight rebounds.
Marymount was on fire in the first half, hitting 57.9% from the
floor while holding Christopher Newport to just a 38.1% clip. Five
different Saints scored at least four points in the frame including
six each from Parks and Lacey as the Blue and White took a 28-22
lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Captains opened the half on an 11-4
run to retake the lead at 32-31. Trading leads once again, CNU used
a 6-0 run to regain the advantage for good while holding off the
Saints at the free throw line down the stretch. The Captains took
advantage of a 4-for-7 showing from three-point range in the second
half to complete the comeback.
Nicole Mitchell led Christopher Newport with 18 points. Camry Green
and Tia Perry both added 10 points while Green grabbed 14 rebounds
for a double-double.
Marymount closes out the season 24-5 overall. The Saints won the
Capital Athletic Conference Championship for the 12th time and made
their 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
