FULL WBCA RELEASE

The York women's basketball team earned Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 honors for its excellence in the classrom in 2014-15.

The Spartans finished with the 20th-best team grade point average in Division III with a combined 3.501 GPA. York was the lone CAC institution in the top 25.

The WBCA Academic Top 25 presented by AT&T annually recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPA inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2014-15 season is the 20th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.

Head coach Betsy Witman expressed her excitement on having student-athletes perform so well in the classroom.

"We strive to recruit not only great players but great students," says Witman. "Our players work very hard on the court and in the classroom. I am proud of their accomplishments and I am happy they get recognized for their academic achievements."

The Spartans have made five other appearances in the WBCA Academic Top 25 during Witman's tenure. The Spartans were the top academic team in Division III during the 2004-05 season as they boasted a team GPA of 3.725. They were ranked second after the 2003-04, 2005-06, and 2008-09 seasons while they were eighth in 2007-08.

"Obviously, it's nice to be recognized and I am glad we are back in the rankings," said Witman. "I have always prided myself in the developing a culture of academic success in our program. We have great young women in our program and this award is a reflection of those student-athletes and culture."
