Mary Washington Tops Marymount, 73-55, for Sixth CAC Women's Basketball Crown
In the 10th meeting between the two sides with a CAC Championship on the line, third-seeded Mary Washington claimed its sixth league crown in program history with a 73-55 road triumph at top-seeded Marymount on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Va.
The win hands UMW its sixth overall CAC title and first since the 2011-12 season. The Eagles (24-4), ranked 22nd in the D3hoops.com national rankings and seventh in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, receive the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason.
The Saints (22-5), ranked No. 4 in the region and 25th in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches national rankings, must now wait for Monday's NCAA bracket selection to learn their postseason fate.
The Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time under head coach Deena Applebury and the 10th time overall. Saturday's win marked the 300th career victory for Applebury, who is now 300-73 at UMW.
The fourth quarter proved to be the decisive period for the Eagles, as they outscored the Saints 24-9 over the final 10 minutes to break open what was a close contest throughout.
UMW freshman Elizabeth Dofflemyer scored a game-high 18 points along with seven rebounds and sophomore Kendall Parker added 16 off the bench to lead the hot-shooting Eagles past the Saints. UMW shot a blistering 49% from the field (25-of-51), including 9-of-17 from three-point range and 14-of-17 from the free throw line. Dofflemyer and Parker lit it up from long-range, each draining four treys, including a 4-for-4 mark from Dofflemyer.
Senior Megan Green posted an all-around line for Eagles with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Brianne Comden reached double-digit scoring with 10 points.
The Saints, playing without senior standout Kievanna Lacey, were led by 17 points and five rebounds from Miranda Krott and 15 points from Aileen Maknati.
NCAA selections and pairings will be announced on Monday at 2:30 p.m. on NCAA.com
