Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Rolls Past Muhlenberg Into NCAA Sweet 16; Marymount Falls to Undefeated Scranton

No. 21 Christopher Newport upended No. 11 Muhlenberg on its home court on Saturday night in impressive fashion, 65-42, advancing the Captains to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years. 

CNU (23-4) will take on Scranton (29-0) in next weekend's Sweet 16 at a yet-to-be-determined location. 

This marks the third straight season and fourth time in the last five years that a CAC women's basketball team has advanced to the NCAA round of 16. 

The second quarter was key for the Captains, as they outscored the host Mules 23-5 in the frame to jump out to a 19-point halftime edge. CNU came out equally strong in the second half, outscoring Muhlenberg 17-9 in the third quarter to extend to a comfortable edge. 

Makenzie Fancher spearheaded an otherwsie balanced CNU attack with game-highs of 21 points and eight assists. 

No. 24 Marymount saw its season come to a close with a 60-44 loss to undefeated and third-ranked Scranton. The Saints, who captured the CAC regular season title and finished as the tournament runner-up, finish the year at 23-6. 

Miranda Krott led the Saints with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals, Nicole Viscuso tallied eight points and eight boards, and Leah Hurst added eight points, five steals and four rebounds.
