Frostburg State's Rayner Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

Frostburg senior forward Kirsten Rayner has been selected to the 2016-17 Academic All-America Women's Basketball Division III Third Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Tuesday.

With the honor, Rayner becomes the second CAC student-athlete to receive Academic All-America honors in 2016-17. She is the 12th Bobcat to earn Academic All-America recognition since Frostburg State has been a member of the CAC, and the 97th Academic All-America selection in CAC history.

Rayner carries a perfect 4.00 GPA and majors in exercise & sport science. She is one of 15 student-athletes named to the three teams and is just one of five Academic All-Americans with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

She has been voted to the Dean's List in each of her three semesters at Frostburg since transferring from Potomac State College and she garnered 2015-16 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) All-Academic team honors. Three weeks ago, Rayner was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II Women's Basketball First Team.

Rayner has been a two-year starter for the Bobcats and earned a spot on the 2016-17 All-CAC Second Team. This year, she is sixth in the CAC and led the Bobcats in scoring (13.2 ppg) and is fifth in the league in rebounding (7.9 rpg).

Rayner, who led the Bobcats in scoring in nine games, helped Frostburg to 12 overall wins and their first appearance in the CAC Tournament since 2012-13.

Last season, Rayner finished sixth in the league and again led Frostburg in scoring (13.4) and was sixth in the CAC in rebounding (8.4 rpg).

Rayner is the second women's basketball player in the 53-year history of the program to earn Academic All-America honors and she is Frostburg's 11th overall honoree across all sports.

To be eligible for the COSIDA Academic All-America and All-District programs, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.
