Christopher Newport and Marymount Women's Basketball Advance to NCAA Sweet 16

Christopher Newport and Marymount posted victories in the second round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday night, sending two CAC squads to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011-12 and the third time ever. Mary Washington saw its season come to a close with a loss to top-ranked and undefeated Amherst.
In Newport News, Va., Christopher Newport (27-2) advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year with a 69-51 triumph over Lynchburg (23-7) at the Freeman Center. The Captains will meet Hope (24-4) in next Friday's third round at a site yet to be determined. Hope knocked off two-time defending national champion Thomas More 74-68 on Saturday. It will mark CNU's seventh all-time appearance in the Sweet 16.
Junior Sam Porter paced CNU, scoring a game-high 22 points and breaking the CNU record for steals in an NCAA Tournament game, with seven, which had stood since 1992. Makenzie Fancher added 13 points and six rebounds in the win. CNU improves to 9-3 in the NCAA Tournament under coach Broderick, while also compiling a 16-5 overall record in the tourney since 2010. Along with that tremendous success, CNU improved to 9-0 in the Freeman Center, and 11-0 all-time at home during NCAA Tournament play.
In Greensboro, N.C., Marymount battled its way through another round of the tournament, advancing past Albright, 68-59, and into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2009-10. The Saints (24-5) will take on third-ranked and unbeaten St. Thomas (Minn.) (29-0) in the next round. St. Thomas topped Chicago 73-69 on Saturday.
Four Saints had double-figure scoring nights led by Nicole Viscuso with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds. Tyffani McQueen chipped in 14 points, while Regan Lohr and Kiki Laux added 12 apiece. Leah Hurst finished with a game-high seven assists, combining for 16 total through the two-game stretch in Greensboro this weekend.
In Amherst, Mass., Mary Washington saw its season come to a close with a a 60-51 loss at top-ranked and undefeated Amherst. The Eagles finish the year with a 24-5 overall record.
UMW's nine-point defeat was just Amherst's fourth win of less than 10 points all season, as they improve to 29-0, and only their second at home. Brianne Comden scored 14 points and Megan Green scored 12 in the finale of their careers to lead the Eagles in the loss.
