#3 St. Mary's And #5 Salisbury Win Saturday To Advance To CAC Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals
Salisbury's Sarah Jessilonis scored a first-half penalty kick for the only goal in a win at York, and St. Mary's sophomore Tori Eskay scored twice in a 3-1 win over Mary Washington, leading their respective teams to the 2010 CAC Women's Soccer semifinal round.
Jessilonis provided the offense and Melissa Orgera registered two saves in posting her fifth shutout of the season as the fifth-seeded Sea Gulls (8-11) upended the fourth-seeded Spartans (7-11-1). Both teams finished the regular season with 5-3 conference records, but YCP gained the home field in the playoffs based on a 4-2 regular-season win over the Gulls.
Salisbury advances to the CAC semifinal round Tuesday (11/2), when they'll face regular-season champion and top-seeded Stevenson (10-6-1). The Mustangs, who had a bye in Saturday's opening round of playoffs, edged the host Sea Gulls in the regular-season meeting of the two teams by a 1-0 margin.
Stevenson shared the 2009 CAC regular-season title with Salisbury, then advanced to the conference championship game where they tied visiting Mary Washington, but lost the title on a shootout.
At St. Mary's, Eskay broke a 1-1 halftime score with her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 55th minute of the match against defending CAC champion and sixth-seeded Mary Washington. She then added an insurance tally in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.
The Seahawks advance to the semifinal round Tuesday (11/2) at second-seeded Frostburg State (14-3). The Bobcats, who are in their first season as members of the conference, own the best overall record in the CAC, including a 5-0 victory over visiting SMC on Oct. 16.
The championship game is scheduled for Nov. 6 at the home field of the highest-seeded team.
