Frostburg State Women's Soccer Plays To Scoreless Draw Vs. Marywood In ECAC South Championship; Lose Title On PKs
The Frostburg State women's soccer team concluded its season
today with a hard-fought loss in penalty kicks after tying Marywood
University through 110 minutes of scoreless soccer Sunday afternoon
at Bobcat Stadium. Marywood won on penalty kicks, 4-1, to clinch
the ECAC South Regional Championship.
The best chances for each team to score came in succession in the
opening minute of the second overtime. Marywood midfielder Emma Nye
had an excellent chance from the left side of the box but was
turned away by Frostburg junior goalkeeper Michelle
Buckmaster. Buckmaster made six saves on the
afternoon, all coming in the second half or overtime.
The Bobcats (17-4-1) turned on the transition game in the ensuing
sequence, springing sophomore forward Amanda
Wharton on a breakaway. Marywood goalie Meghan Coyle
aggressively challenged Wharton and made a kick save to preserve
the scoreless tie.
In the shootout, Marywood connected on all four of its shots. The
Bobcats hit on 1-of-3, with junior midfielder Cassie
Donahue (scoring in the second round to pull the
Bobcats to within 2-1. But Marywood, who entered the tournament as
the No. 6 seed, ended the Bobcats' hopes of a regional title by
scoring on its next two opportunities.
