Wesley Women's Soccer Team Gains First-Ever ECAC Playoff Bid: Wolverines Travel To Arcadia In First Round
Wesley College's women's soccer team earned a berth in the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Championship, it was announced by the organization on Monday evening. The Wolverines, who finished 10-6-1 overall, are the seventh seed and will travel to No. 2 Arcadia (15-6-0) for a First Round Game on Wednesday, November 12 at 7 pm.
This is the first time that the Wolverines has been selected to play in the ECAC Championship and their ten victories is the Navy & White's most since the 2007 season when it went 12-8-1. The 2007 season was Wesley's first in the Capital Athletic Conference and the Wolverines advanced to the CAC Semifinals that year.
Should Wesley advance past the Knights, who won the ECAC South Tournament in 2013, it will be on the road again to face the winner of Muhlenberg/Wilkes in the Semifinals on Saturday, November 15. The two semifinal winners will meet the following day at the higher remaining seed in the Championship Game.
Wesley features a well balanced scoring attack with six players recording at least ten points on the season and ten players with two or more goals. Leading the way this season was freshman Cassidy McSorley with seven goals and three assists for 17 points while seniors Chelsi Biener and Christina Verzi were just behind with 15 points. SeniorMorgan Warrington led the CAC with seven assists on the season and also scored three goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Nasia Denegal anchors the defense with a CAC-leading six shutouts along with a 1.27 goals against average. Among Denegal's best performances was a 19 save effort in a 1-1 draw against eventual CAC Champion Frostburg State.
Denegal was helped out by an experienced backfield led by captains Stevi Carpenter and Kerri Pagels on the outside, as well as Chelsea Marriner and Natalie Trujillo inside.
