Mary Washington and Southern Virginia Women's Tennis Claim CAC Victories Over Weekend
Mary Washington and Southern Virginia each picked up CAC women's tennis victories to headline weekend action around the conference, while Salisbury claimed a non-conference victory over Washington College.
With shutout wins over York and Penn State Harrisburg on Friday, Mary Washington (11-6, 4-0 CAC) climbed into a three-way deadlock atop the CAC with Salisbury and St. Mary's. The Eagles, ranked 20th in the latest ITA national rankings, concluded their weekend action on Saturday with an 8-1 setback at No. 6 Carnegie Mellon. Freshman Kait Brogan scored UMW's lone point at No. 5 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
In the lone CAC contest on Saturday, Southern Virginia (4-8, 1-4 CAC) edged York (3-11, 0-5 CAC) by a 5-4 margin for its first league win of the year. Ann Kuroki topped York's Emily Skutnik 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to seal the victory for the Knights. On Friday, Southern Virginia picked up a convincing 8-1 non-conference win over Hood.
A pair of CAC teams faced off against Washington College in non-conference play, with St. Mary's falling 5-1 on Friday and Salisbury grabbing a 6-3 triumph on Saturday. Salisbury swept all three doubles matches, and received straight-set singles wins from Charlotte Walker at No. 6, Katie Youlios at No. 2 and Natalie Savage at No. 1. For St. Mary's, Melissa Barall tallied the Seahawks lone point with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 singles.
Conference action resumes on Wednesday with a pair of CAC contests featuring the four unbeaten teams. Salisbury (4-0) travels to Mary Washington (4-0), while St. Mary's (4-0) travels to Christopher Newport (3-0), both at 4 p.m.
