YORK, Pa. -- Southern Virginia freshman Shawn Lamb and Christopher Newport senior Matt Hayden were tabbed as the CAC Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week for March 6, 2017.   

Offensive Player of the Week

Southern Virginia freshman Shawn Lamb was named the CAC Offensive Player of the Week after totaling 13 points with eight goals and five assists in a 2-0 week for the Knights. Lamb notched two goals and two assists in an 11-10 overtime victory over Bridgewater (Va.), including the game-winning goal in overtime. In a 14-6 triumph over Birmingham-Southern, he tallied six goals and three assists. Overall, he scored or assisted on over half (13-of-25) of the Knights' goals for the week, and added seven ground balls. Lamb ranks third in the CAC in goals and fifth in assists this season. 

 

Defensive Player of the Week

Christopher Newport senior Matt Hayden was selected as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after allowing just two goals during his time between in the pipes in wins over Virginia Wesleyan and Guilford. On Wednesday, he came through with his fourth consecutive double-digit save effort after notching 11 stops in 42 minutes of work against the Marlins. He allowed only two goals before exiting in the third quarter. Three days later, he was flawless in a victory over Guilford, making five stops not allowing a single goal during the first three quarters of the game before leaving with a comfortable advantage. He also caused two turnovers and collected three ground balls during his 45 minutes of work against the Quakers. For the week, Hayden posted a 88.9% save percentage and 1.37 goals against average.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Salisbury is ranked No. 1 in both the USILA and Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Rankings, while York is ranked No. 8 in the USILA poll No. 5 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine poll. Frostburg State is receiving votes in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine rankings ... Christopher Newport senior Will Geise led the Captains with nine points, five goals, and four assists during the week. Against Virginia Wesleyan, he posted a season-high six points, including four goals. He also made history when he scored twice in the span of seven seconds during the second quarter. That marked the fastest consecutive goals by a single player in program history, topping John Thompson's 10-second surge against VWC in 2014. Three days later, he capped off his week with three points, including a pair of assists, against Guilford ... Frostburg State junior Adam Gross finished the week with four goals and one assist, including a three-goal effort in the Bobcats' 8-3 win over Lebanon Valley ... Senior Mike Marson led Mary Washington to a 12-9 win over Widener on Saturday, scoring four goals and adding an assist. He also collected five ground balls for the Eagles ... Marymount sophomore Sean Friedman paced the Saints with a six-point week, notching two goals against Catholic and two goals and two assists against St. Vincent. Daniel Bothwell scooped up 11 ground balls, caused two turnovers and scored his first goal of the season in a 1-1 week for the Saints ... Michael Bucci posted a .657 face-off win percentage in two games for St. Mary's. Bucci won a season-best 16 face-offs and scored his first goal as a Seahawk against Washington College. He also scooped up 14 ground balls and one caused turnover ... Salisbury downed No. 13 Ohio Wesleyan 10-6. Nathan Blondino notched two goals and three assists on just four shots, adding four ground balls. Andrew Ternahan posted his second-straight seven groundball outing and added two caused turnovers. Ternahan now sits in fourth in the CAC in groundballs with 29, and is second in the conference with 11 caused turnovers ... Wesley freshman goalkeeper James Cella made 29 saves in a split of two games last week, while Josh Wassum put away a career-high five goals against Hanover ... York goalkeeper Landry Marshall recorded a career-high 17 saves in the Spartans' 9-8 double overtime loss to Lynchburg on Saturday. For the year, Marshall owns a 6.55 goals against average and a .557 save percentage with 39 saves in 284 minutes.
