YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport junior Justin Cerny collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for Oct. 4, 2016.

Christopher Newport junior Justin Cerny collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors after advancing to the quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles championship draws at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Cerny went 3-1 in singles as the No. 5 seed and 2-1 in doubles with a first-round bye as the No. 5 seed along with partner David Reed. In singles, Cerny defeated two opponents from Johns Hopkins and one from Franklin & Marshall en route to the quarterfinals, where he fell to Swarthmore's Mark Fallati 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, Cerny and Reed topped opponents from Franklin & Marshall and Swarthmore before falling to eventual champions Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh from Johns Hopkins, 9-7.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Mary Washington hosted the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Fredericksburg, Va. last weekend ... Mary Washington sophomore Matt Miles turned in a top performance at the ITA Southeast Regional, advancing to the quarterfinal round of singles as an unseeded player, and reaching the round of 16 in doubles with senior Brandon Griffin, who also reached the singles quarters. Miles defeated Ari Cepelewicz, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round, and fifth seeded David Reed, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32, and then topped Matthew Sklar, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16. He fell to top seed Michael Buxbaum, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarters. In doubles, Miles and Griffin won their round of 32 match before falling in a tight 9-7 match in the round of 16 ... Salisbury junior Kelson Weber won two matches in the B2 draw of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
