YORK, Pa. --  Christopher Newport junior Justin Cerny nabbed CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for Oct. 11, 2016.

Christopher Newport junior Justin Cerny nabbed CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after picking up a match-clinching victory as the last player on the court in a 5-4 win against nationally-ranked Oberlin. With the team score knotted a 4-4, Cerny was down 5-4 in the third set, facing the individual and team loss, but battled back to win the set 7-5. His final score at No. 2 singles against Stephen Grupposo was 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Cerny also paired with David Reed for a narrow loss at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. In the match against seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon, Cerny and Reed suffered another narrow loss, 8-6, against an All-American duo for the Tartans. In singles, Cerny won the first set against his nationally-ranked opponent, Daniel Levine (24th in final ITA singles rankings), before falling 3-6, 6-2, 10-3.

CAC men's tennis teams have wrapped up the fall 2016 season ... Frostburg State edged McDaniel 5-4 in its lone match of the week ... Penn State Harrisburg went 1-2 last week with wins over Alvernia (5-4) and defeats to Elizabethtown (7-2) and Susquehanna (8-1) ... Southern Virginia fell to Randolph 6-3 ... York was edged by Messiah, 5-4.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
