Christopher Newport Junior Devon Byrd and Marymount Junior Leah Hurst Selected as CAC Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week
YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport junior Devon Byrd and Marymount junior Leah Hurst were selected as the CAC Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week for Feb. 20, 2017 after both posting well-rounded statistical lines in helping their squads to 2-0 weeks.

Christopher Newport junior Devon Byrd was named the CAC Co-Player of the Week after helping the Captains clinch the top seed in the CAC Tournament for the first time with a pair of victories last week. Byrd posted well-rounded averages of 8.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 50% from the field in wins over Southern Virginia and York. In her 31 minutes of play, she did not record a single turnover. She played only 13 minutes vs. Southern Virginia, but finished with five points, five rebounds and five steals. On Saturday, she registered a double-double on the road at York with 12 points and 11 boards along with five assists and two steals, helping the Captains clinch their first-ever CAC regular season title.

Marymount junior Leah Hurst collected CAC Co-Player of the Week honors after guiding the Saints to two CAC victories to extend their winning streak to seven games entering the postseason. Hurst was all over the stat sheet in wins over No. 12 Mary Washington and Penn State Harrisburg, averaging 9.5 points, 5.0 assists, 5.0 steals, and 3.5 rebounds on 50% shooting from the floor. Against the Eagles, Hurst posted a game-high 17 points on 66.7% shooting along with a perfect 8-for-8 mark from the free-throw line. She also added five rebounds, a game-high four steals, and a game-high seven assists. Her defensive tenacity carried over to Saturday's matchup against Penn State Harrisburg, as she notched a game-high six steals and a block in the win. Hurst is the outright leader in assists in the league with 5.1 per game, while coming in at fifth in steals per game with 2.8.

A trio of CAC teams are receiving recognition in the national polls. Christopher Newport is ranked No. 9 by the WBCA and No. 12 by D3hoops.com, while Mary Washington is ranked No. 12 by the WBCA and No. 15 by D3hoops.com. Marymount is receiving votes in the WBCA poll and ranked No. 25 by D3hoops.com ... The six-team CAC Tournament begins on Tuesday with a pair of first-round matchups. No. 3 Marymount will host No. 6 Salisbury at 6 p.m., while No. 4 York will host No. 5 Frostburg State at 6 p.m. ... No. 1 CNU and No. 2 UMW earned first-round byes and will host Thursday's semifinals ... Frostburg State's Sharyce Warren averaged 14.0 PPG in two games last week, capping the regular season with 15 points in the Bobcats' win over rival Salisbury. The Bobcats will compete in the CAC postseason for the first time since the 2012-13 season ... Mary Washington All-American Brianne Comden averaged 19 PPG and 8.5 rebounds as the Eagles split a pair of contests lastweek. She scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a defeat at Marymount on Wednesday, and added 22 points and nine rebounds in a win at Wesley. She shot 53.1% from the floor for the week, and currently stands in fourth place all-time in scoring in school history ... Penn State Harrisburg's Kaitlyn Carmo averaged 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as the Lions wrapped up their season last week ... Nina Haller averaged a double-double in a 1-1 week for St. Mary's. Haller put up a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds plus six blocks in the win over Salisbury. She ended her career with 15 points and 10 boards at Southern Virginia ... Salisbury senior Lauren Rothfeld averaged 17.5 points per contest in an 0-2 week for the Sea Gulls. Against St. Mary's she accounted for 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals. She followed that up with an even better performance against Frostburg State , going off for 19 points, nine assists, and five steals ... Southern Virginia's Merideth Ouellette was the only Knight with double-digits against CNU, and led the team in scoring both games. She averaged 17.5 this week, above her season average of 11.9 PPG. Ouellette tied her career-high with seven assists, and pulled down seven rebounds in win over St. Mary's ... Wesley senior Brionna Johnson wrapped up her collegiate career by becoming just the second player in Wesley basketball history to record over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Johnson recorded her 1,000th rebound against Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday.
