YORK, Pa. -- Salisbury senior Molly Simpson and York sophomore Courtney Martin were named the CAC Softball Players of the Week for Apri 11, 2016.

Salisbury senior Molly Simpson was named the CAC Player of the Week after going 5-for-5 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in a twinbill sweep over Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday. Simpson's three home runs gives her 10 for the year, vaulting her into a tie for second in the nation. She drove in eight runs in the opener, which is just one shy of the CAC single-game record, which has stood since 1997. Along with the three long balls, she also had a double and a single, and a stolen base.

Pitcher of the Week

York sophomore Courtney Martin was honored as the CAC Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 last week with a 0.44 ERA in 16 innings of work. Martin opened the week allowing just one run on one hit in four innings against Franklin & Marshall. She followed that with a seven-inning shutout of Hood, surrendering four hits with five strikeouts in the Spartans' 5-0 win. Martin closed out the week with a five-hit shutout of Wesley, striking out five and walking one en route to her third shutout of the year. She totaled 12 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run throughout the week.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Just one week remains in the CAC regular season, with the CAC Tournament set to begin on Thursday, April 21 at the highest seed ... Salisbury sits alone in first place at 5-1, with Christopher Newport (8-2) and Frostburg State (6-2) each with two losses. Mary Washington is in fourth at 6-4, with York (4-4) and Wesley currently tied for fifth (4-4) ... In the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) April 6 rankings, Salisbury is No. 6 and Christopher Newport is No. 8 ... Scoop Simon led CNU to a 5-1 week, including a 3-1 mark in CAC action. Simon went 6-for-7 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in a doubleheader sweep over Meredith. She currently leads the Captains in 11 offensive categories ... Frostburg State junior Hannah Tavik hit .542 (13-for-24) with nine runs scored, 10 RBIs, two triples, a double and a home run as the Bobcats collected a 4-2 week. Tavik also earned two wins in the circle, including a win over CNU ... Senior Emily Briggs led Mary Washington to three conference wins last week, batting .556 (10-for-18), including a 9-for-14 performance in doubleheaders against Southern Virginia and Frostburg State. She drove in eight runs and scored four runs. Freshman Kara Deppe turned in a big week for the Eagles, throwing four innings of a five-inning no hitter against Southern Virginia on Friday. For the week, she posted a 1.79 ERA in three games, with 19 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, allowing just four earned runs ... Salisbury's Brooke Mizelle struck out a career-high nine batters in a complete-game victory over Penn State Harrisburg ... Southern Virginia's Mollie Gabbert recorded eight RBIs last week and leads the Knights in batting average, RBIs, and home runs (10th in CAC) this year ... Nina Marcano helped Wesley to a split with York with a 4-for-6 effort in the doubleheader on Sunday. The junior went 3-for-3 in game one with a triple (tying Wesley's all-time career triples mark with 17) and all three of Wesley's RBIs to give the team a 3-2 victory over the Spartans. She added another hit in game two to move to .667 on the day from the plate ... York's Carleigh Ruleman had a big week for the Spartans as she hit .471 with three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs in York's 3-3 week. For the year, Ruleman is hitting .333 with 20 RBI, eight doubles and a team-high seven home runs.
